Just a Flutter

We are seeing numerous yellow butterflies right now. I spend an inordinate amount of time trying to capture one. The vague yellow you see is my best effort so far. I'm glad I wasn't using film.
 

Clean Fleet

This crew had to go to the carwash after an excursion with Colin to the gravel pit. Because also plays with them inside, we wanted to avoid tire tracks across the floor.
 

Celebrating 75 Years

Mission sponsored a street party for its 75th birthday. They had a costume contest for each decade. Below you can see '50s (front) and '60s. 

And there was free cotton candy!

 

Halloween Prep

Vala and Lowell visited because they were out sick from school. They thought my home lacked Halloween appeal so took on the decorating task. Above Vala is getting out the Halloween books. 

Then they dressed Bruce the Goose and then created some Halloween creatures.

Happy Birthday to Mom

We celebrated Mom's birthday in 1991. I love that Hayden has her "fancy" tape deck, which was probably playing a happy birthday tape. 
 

Sprite in the Woods

Colin was adventuring in the woods off Roe Park.

 

Mission Window Art

The city of Mission encouraged businesses to decorate their windows in celebration of the city’s 75th anniversary. The public gets to vote for their favorite.

The fairies have the camper situated in the forest.

 

Mission Bike Rodeo

Colin (left) and Adam (right) were among the early participants in the Mission Bike Rodeo. There was a safety cone course and other activities. It was sponsored by the Mission Police Department and Target to teach bike safety. They are in the Target parking lot. Colin also got a chance to ride his bigger bike, with some help.

Find the Baby

The Mission lifeguards have been playing a game of stashing the lifesaver training dummies around the pool area. Some have been at the top of the huge indoor slide, etc. This one looks a bit like a horror entry, but it was easy to spot on the pool deck.
 

Walking Inspiration

I enjoy the chalk messages I am seeing on my walks. They add some fun to the outings.
 

Who's Always Smiling, Never Sad?

Whizzo the Clown that's who. Hayden and Stacy (middle) got to be on his TV show in 1984. I remember that Stacy was quite conscientious about keeping Hayden safe.
 

Mighty Bike

Colin looks tiny atop the Mighty Bike climbable art in R Park. It's 12 foot and welcomes adults to climb too. 
 

Zentangle

We had a class on Zentangle at church. It's doodling taken to a more artistic level. It was interesting.
 

Battery Take Back

Skip-the-Bin mascot Woodsy Owl and his Air Stream trailer were on hand to help at Shawnee's Battery Take Back event. We took some plain old used batteries as well as power tool ones that no longer charge. The purpose was to get people to recycle their used batteries in a safer, more environmentally friendly way.

Cheer Debut

Vala and Lowell are on the Eudora Elementary cheer squad and had their cheering debut yesterday for a 4th grade football game. Lowell held up Red in one routine.

Since the SMEast parade goes in front of the church, we offer snacks, water and use of our bathrooms.

By today's standards, Susan would probably have been arrested. But in 1971, not a problem to dip into the reflecting pool. You can vaguely see the Washington Monument.

 

Scavenger Hunt

Colin and friends were on a scavenger hunt at the library. They did an excellent job of working together to find the stickers.

Vala picked the candles for Hayden's cake. In addition to the number of candles, she used ones that spelled Hayden's name but the effect was lost in the conflagration.
 

20th Anniversary of Cars

In celebration of the anniversary, I took the grandkids to see "Cars" on the big screen at Extreme Screen, Union Station. Although we've watched it many times it was fun to see it this way.

Fall Is Coming

Despite the unbearable heat, nature has decided to go forward with fall. Nice to see, difficult to appreciate when it is 99°.
 

Take Some Flowers

Hard to read here but the sign says: Take some flowers and have a happy day." This house grows beautiful zinnias and shares them each summer.

Get wet! Colin did mention he preferred jumping into the water but the pools are closed weekdays with all the guards in school.

We were taking a photo to use next year to compare how tall they each stood in the water. Colin over estimated how far out he could stand up and still breathe. Then we adjourned to the barn for some Foosball.

Thank You, Dolly

Stacy stacked up all the books her kids have received through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program. The library provided a free book once a month until age 5 to all kids who signed up. The program will live on, partly through donations like the recent $2 million donation from Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift.
