An Explosion Rocked the City

... 30 years ago and killed six firefighters. This memorial is for those six firefighters who died in a huge explosion at 4:00 a.m. Nov. 29, 1988. Firefighters of Pumper Companies 30 and 41 (as see on the flag) were dispatched after 911 calls came in reporting a fire had been set to a pickup truck near two trailers of explosives at a construction site at this location (87th street exit of Highway 71 in Kansas City). The trailers ignited causing a catastrophic explosion. We were awakened from a sound sleep at our home miles away by the explosion.
