What Do You See?

Looks orange to me but so many fountains are pink right now for breast cancer awareness, I'm not sure if that's the intention. Maybe it's just a Halloween orange.

Light the Town Pink

The Village Shops in Prairie Village and Shawnee Mission Medical Center are adorned in pink lights through October as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They had a special lighting ceremony last night.

Preemptive Candle Blowing

I love this photo because Mom blew out her birthday candles before we finished singing. Everyone had a good laugh, except maybe Taylor.

Not a Bouncy House Floor

Mission Hills is using these textile bags as part of a dredging of the pond in Mission Hills, often known as Eisenhower Lake. Last time they dredged it, apparently it released a terrible smell as the sludge was hauled off in trucks. This time the system pulls the water into the bags, the sediment settles and the water is returned to the pond. Takes about 2 months and Ensley Lane has to be closed. The goal is to make it more livable for fish again, and not annoy the nearby residents.

Who Needs Gifts

We celebrated my great-nephew Dylan's first birthday and he had no interest in the gifts. Rather he was absorbed with a remote.

Plenty of Corn

Who wouldn't enjoy a "sandbox" filled with corn at a fall festival? These guys were loving it. All part of the fun at the Overland Park Fall Festival.

Quick Paint Competition

Thirty artists gathered at 7:00 p.m. around the J.C. Nichols Fountain to paint for two hours. At the conclusion, the paintings were judged and people could buy them right off the easels. They will also be available to see at a reception at the Discovery Center on October 3. They were painting with headlamps because it was dark by the end. It was all part of the Brush Creek Art Walk.

Which One Is Not Like the Others?

I love that Holly inserted herself in this photo. I think it was intended to be of Hayden and Megan but Stacy is flying in on top, Holly is in and Calvin is nearby, and, of course, Elliot.

Gates of Paradise

These craftsmen are touching up the Gates of Paradise at the Nelson-Atkins. The doors are located just inside the doors to the Bloch building and apparently folks have not been able to resist touching them. The 17-foot-tall gilded doors, weighing 4 1/2 tons, are casts of the original doors created in the 15th-century by sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti for the east facade of the Baptistery of the Duomo (cathedral) in Florence, Italy. It's the first time the casts have been seen in a U.S. museum. Very impressive in size and detail.

We Have Not Forgotten

Two columns of light to symbolize the twin towers were on display at the 9/11 Memorial in Overland Park last night. I remember a similar display when we were in New York in September 2006. On the far right of the photo you can see the edge of a beam from ground zero. A peaceful evening. Quiet groups of people were reading the names of the victims and examining the timeline of the attack.

Gathering in the Park

Some familiar faces were part of the the Colonial Church picnic kicking off our academic year. For some reason the balloons attached to the sign kept popping which was disconcerting to say the least. Hayden was part of the winning scavenger hunt team but Stacy and Joseph each had great teams. Adults were matched with kids.

They're Here!

The return of the monarchs was being celebrated yesterday at an open house at Foley Hall on the KU campus. The tree was full of monarchs but they were high enough it was hard to get a good photo. They hold the open house to provide information about creating Monarch waystations and to show off the butterfly and pollinator garden created and maintained by the Douglas County Master Gardeners.

Bloch Anniversary Party

Quixot
Members of Quixotic, a performance art group, performed at the top of the Nelson-Atkins Museum as part of a celebration of the 10 year anniversary of the Bloch Building last night. That was followed by a light show on the Bloch Building facade.

Bigger Than Life

The stained glass mural in the sanctuary at the Church of the Resurrection is huge. Unfortunately they neglected to consider the speakers when designing the sanctuary so parts are obscured depending on where you are seated. On the left is the Old Testament and on the right the New Testament, which also features religious folks such as Billy Graham, C.S. Lewis, Mother Theresa, John Wesley and many, many more (see below).

Commemorated in Books

These giant books in a Tonganoxie, KS pocket park have titles depicting people and things that are part of Tonganoxie’s history. At the middle of the mural is Dr. Phil Stevens, a family physician in town for 60 years until his death in 2015. He is looking over the shoulder of a girl trying to weigh herself in his office.
