These craftsmen are touching up the Gates of Paradise at the Nelson-Atkins. The doors are located just inside the doors to the Bloch building and apparently folks have not been able to resist touching them. The 17-foot-tall gilded doors, weighing 4 1/2 tons, are casts of the
original doors created in the 15th-century by sculptor Lorenzo
Ghiberti for the east facade of the Baptistery of the Duomo (cathedral)
in Florence, Italy. It's the first time the casts have been seen in a U.S. museum. Very impressive in size and detail. |
