Bears Are Sleeping

Bears were sleeping under the parachute at storytime ... until they weren't.

A Rakish Cake

Happy birthday to Susan. I was intrigued by the angle of the cake. 1970

Passing the Torch

Judy Sherry, who founded Grandparents for Gun Safety after the Sandy Hook shootings, stepped down as chairman after 12 years. Thankfully she will continue to be actively involved.

Siblings Who Lunch

Lunch with much frivolity. We missed Susan, who couldn't make it to Kansas City, for this one.

The Prairie Village community garden quietly waits for a new season of gardeners.

Ice Sculpture

Here we are 3 weeks on and everything is still frozen. Some things – like this – are at least artistic. Mostly it's depressing. But melting is allegedly on the horizon.

Unhappy Postal Customer

We personally know that the blue boxes are unsafe for mail after checks of Orion Golf were stolen from such a box. We now deposit mail only inside a post office. I'm certain this notification lasted only as long as it took the post office to see it.

An Inauguration of a Different Time

Gov. Bennett's inauguration in 1975. I don't know that there is anyone I am related to in this photo but I thought it was timely.

Winter Waterland

We have these cute penguins greetings us as we slither into water aerobics. It's hard to psych myself to get in water in the winter but these are a nice distraction.

A select committee was commissioned yesterday to lead the search for a new senior pastor for Colonial Church.

Standing Tall

We watched Howard's great-nephew Ellis play goalie in a game as he and mom Greta were in town for a tournament. Ellis plays on an Edmond, OK team of 8-year-olds but stands much taller than his teammates. Since his parents are tall, not really surprising.

Ghost Cacti

These would be an interesting addition to the indoor garden, if only I could keep cacti alive.

Bare Backside

We discovered this snow sculpture at the Nelson-Atkins. Cracked Colin up. The Nelson said it was unauthorized but they would let the sun dispose of it. Artist was Zeke Henry, who called it a "temporary loan." Below, Colin tried to put the head back on the other snowman but was unsuccessful.

Happy Birthday, Bugs!

This was the 50th birthday of Bugs Bunny and I'm guessing something my Dad took them to see. Stacy, Hayden and Morgan don't look thrilled. Frances is trying to escape.

Chiefs Light the Town

Kansas city landmarks are turning their exteriors to support the Chiefs run to the Super Bowl. Here KC Wheel is showing its support.

Snow Gnome

Hayden's gnome has changed from Christmas to his stocking cap for winter.

The Star Descends

It takes a village to get the nativity star down because it hangs so high. The ladder, as you can see, is quite unwieldy for starters. It took 4 to maneuver the ladder into place. Joseph climbed the ladder (but I missed that moment) to get the star. It hangs just below the stained glass window for the pageant.

Gammy's Snow Carnival

We started with snow volcanoes followed by snow frolicking including me getting attacked by snowballs.

Then we made snow ice cream. All agreed it was delicious. We started with vanilla but added chocolate at Vala's request.

It's Getting Tall

My amaryllis is getting tall but no bloom yet. Stacy gave it to me for Christmas. I love that it's in a sock instead of a pot.

Snow Volcano

Because this mostly looks like a sponge in the snow, watch the video below. It was a practice for doing with the grandkids.

Snowmageddon in 1973

Apparently Kansas City had a major winter storm in January 1973 that, according to the New York Times. "Thousands of families huddled near fireplaces and gas stoves and hauled kerosene lamps out of attics in Kansas City, Mo., where ice and snow storms caused one of the worst power blackouts in the city's history." Cindy and Bimbo are inspecting the damage. It's always the ice before that wreaks the most havoc.

Asleep on the Job

I was waiting for Mr. Cardinal because he'd be so much more colorful. But while we were waiting, Mrs. Cardinal fell asleep.

Let's Call It 10 Inches

Depending on where I measure, the blizzard deposited 9.5 inches up to 10.5. I measured in two places where it didn't appear to drift but still not sure how accurate. Any way you look at it, that is a bunch of snow!

It Just Keeps Coming

I was a doubter but this winter storm lived up to the predictions. No one was going anywhere. My snowman is happy though. We decided to leave him out when we put the Christmas lights away so he could enjoy winter.

Soup Storage

Stacy gave me these cool freezer cubes to portion and freeze soup. First batch is ready for the freezer. After they are frozen, you pop them out and store in bags, moving to refrigerator as you need one. I love this idea!

Peppermint Orangery

The Orangery at Kauffman Memorial Gardens is decorated with peppermints for the holiday season. But, as Colin discovered, it still lives up to its name with oranges ripening on the trees.

Happy New Year!

Colin and I celebrated at Dolce Bakery with seasonal treats. It's a bit difficult to read the 2025 but it's there.
