A Slice of Ice

The Ice at Park Place is a small skating rink nestled in among the shops near 115th and Nall. It's only open from Thanksgiving to Valentine's Day. In the summer, it's a lawn.

A Tool for the Absurd

The Rabbit Hole

This exhibit in the new gallery at the renovated Johnson County Central Resource Library has items from The Rabbit Hole's Literary Fashion Exhibit, which is supposed to entice young readers. The Rabbit Hole is a concept space on Southwest Blvd. So many cool things at the renewed library including MakerSpace with a 3D printer, laser cutter, die cutting, a green room, a sound studio. Oh yeah, and the library still has books! Check it out.

SouveNEAR

SouveNEAR has four machines in the KCI terminals and one at Union Station where you can buy locally made shirts, jewelry, etc. The company was started in 2014 and I met one of the founders, Tiffany King, at our book discussion group so I went in search of one of the machines. This one is in Union Station.

Nice Day for a Picnic

Not really but it could have been much colder at Mill Creek Park when we were feeding the homeless yesterday. Not many takers since it's January.

Vanishing Lake

South Park lake is completely frozen and covered with snow except for that small area in the center of the photo.

Coffee 101

Cindy and I took a tour of The Roasterie off Southwest Blvd. and I learned so much about coffee - the kinds, how it's roasted, where it grows, how to brew it. Fascinating. These beans are from Guatemala, as you can see. The higher the altitude where it is grown, the better the flavor. We saw how it is air roasted, how flavor is added, how it's packaged, how to brew and we got a taste.

Savory Wall

We went to Q-39 for Restaurant Week and were seated next to a wall of sauce. Makes a delicious barrier.

Gilham Park of Old

I finally found the photos of Gilham Park with the giant Santa and Snowman. In 1984, Dad took Hayden and Stacy to see them. You may remember from my post on December 13 that there are only lights now at Christmas time. Wonder what happened to the big figures?

Danger! Danger!

Not sure why the exit sign is hanging like this but I doubt that it's dangerous.I believe someone at the daily meetings we have upstairs posted the sign. Perhaps some time should be spent studying spelling?

Must Be a Glacier

The fountain at Vince and Associates has turned blue in its frozen state. So since glaciers often are blue I have surmised that it is not just a fountain but a glacier that settled here.

Sleeping Garden

The Loose Park Rose Garden was silent and cold (5 degrees) yesterday after the snowfall.

Since the Golfers Left

... the geese have taken over at Meadowbrook Country Club. There are hundreds. Except for the mowers, almost no one goes on the grounds while it's in transition to a park and development so the geese are undisturbed.

Third Friday Splendor

Third Fridays in Downtown Overland Park are always fun. Little cold last night but I saw my friend Cathy Sherman's photos at Images Gallery and had a pie flight at the Upper Crust Bakery. The flight was pecan, German chocolate and raspberry rhubarb.

Go Chiefs!

Meyer Fountain is red, sans water. Haven't seen as much red as we did blue but it's still early. When they win Saturday, I'm betting more red will be appearing.

1980s Madness

Perfect Spot for Hockey

These guys love when the ice freezes in the reflecting pond on Ward Parkway. They have some serious hockey games.

Two hours, six meals and a good time with two daughters. What more could you want?

The Heat Is On

We are the proud owners of a new furnace, water heater and air conditioner. The only way to get to the water heater, which was cleverly put in the tiny utility room, with the furnace was to remove the furnace. Two guys, a furnace and a water heater were stuffed in that tiny room.

Television Graveyard

After being replaced by new flat screens, the giant old TVs gathered in the upstairs hallway awaiting transport to recycling. I don't know what happens to the giant carts they were wheeled around on, and sometimes fell off.

Epiphany

As we wrap up the 2015 holiday season, a salute to the family snowmen on Flint.

The lights of the Muriel Kauffman Theatre as we waited for Cirque Dreams Holidaze to start. Really fun show with acrobats, singers, holiday music, amazing costumes, lights and energy. Just what you'd expect a Cirque show to be.
