Colonial shared a fast-breaking post-Ramadan dinner with Turkish members of the Dialogue Institute of the Southwest. They explained Ramadan and why they fast. There were a lot of us and they brought all the food.
KCPT's booth at Union Station offered an opportunity to collect stories
of veterans. Vietnam veterans and their families were invited to mark
the date and location of their service on the 13 x 20 foot map.
I
got to help Mrs. Ferguson and other Indian Hills staff check in all the
MacBooks from the 7th and 8th graders. It's quite an undertaking but
Hayden has it going smoothly. We have to check for damage and get some
interesting stories along the way. We checked in over 300 Tuesday and more will be returned today. Another school year coming to a
close.
I bought this peony about five years ago from the now-defunct peony farm on Bannister and finally I have a big bloom with more buds. I know these plants are slow to mature but this one took forever!
Finn came to visit and brought some of his favorite toys — busts of composers, of course. They are awards Stacy received at different levels of her piano training. Seems as good a use for them as any.
This young fox traveled through our backyard. I wasn't quick enough to catch him in our yard but here he is just over the fence in the neighbor's wild kingdom.
Fun to share Mother's Day with my daughters, playing in the Bell Choir. We were concerned that Hayden would have her baby and not be available to direct but she and baby L made it. (You can only see half of the bell choir; we are mightier than you can see.)
This tapestry is in the chapel at Village Church. From a distance it's hard to distinguish how it is made. Up close (below) you can see the yarns and the attached petals.
To make eating fruit more fun, you can carve your mango into a flower. The vendor was selling these for $4 flavored with lime, salt, cinnamon, sugar, chili powder, you name it. I didn't try one but it looks cool.
The
students from Broadmoor Bistro at Broadmoor Technical Center in Shawnee
Mission School District were selling scrumptious food at the Overland
Park Farmers Market. You could have breads, pickled everything, cinnamon
rolls, croissants and breakfast burritos (prepared on site). Delicious!
Artist Christopher Weed of Colorado created this sculpture for Merriam Marketplace last year. He describes them as new seedlings, in which a round seed sends out a young shoot. The orbs are intended to suggest large seeds and have a highly polished surface as a tribute to gazing balls that decorate gardens. (If you look closely you can see the photographer.)
This is my birthday in 1989. So much happening here – Stacy appears to have injured herself, I'm making a strange face Hayden finds amusing, and Morgan finds the whole thing very funny. And yet all the candles are still lit.
Astronaut Terry Virts spoke as part of National Geographic Live at the Kauffman Center. Fascinating stories about his time on the International Space Station. Below is his photo of the southern lights.
