Decoration Day Tributes

With the Liberty Memorial appropriately in the background, you can see graves of veterans in Union Cemetery, adorned with flags provided by Boy Scouts. The cemetery includes the graves of many Civil War veterans, including that of Sgt. Sam Hayes (below) of the 132nd Indiana Infantry Regiment, which served in the Union Army in 1864. The cemetery is also believed to include mass graves from the Civil War. Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day and was created in 1865 expressly to honor the Civil War dead.

Reflections of Vala

These peonies came from my grandmother's yard. Since she spent much of May saving the blooms in the refrigerator to take around to graves on Decoration Day it seemed appropriate for this Memorial Day weekend. Don't know why all of mine are white because I know she had other colors.

Water Is Flowing

In a normal year, you'd expect the JC Nichols Fountain to be on by now but because of the stay-at-home order, yesterday was the first day city fountains were flowing, and only 3 of them at that. The Spirit of Freedom fountain along Brush Creek at Cleveland Avenue and the Meyer Circle Sea Horse on Ward Parkway were also to be turned on.

I'm have seen several yards with an abundance of pinwheels gracing the lawn. This one had a sign that said it was provided by the Pinwheel Posse and to please just take a photo but leave the pinwheels. They'd be happy if you posted your photo to Facebook.

Salute to Blue

The driving procession by law enforcement honoring fallen Officer Mosher passed close by us on Metcalf. Really difficult to get a photo but it was an impressive parade of police and sheriff cars. Matt said he wanted to be in it but had to work. While honoring Mosher, it was also a Salute to Blue honoring law enforcement this week.
