Celebrating the Creators

I find Maker Faire Kansas City a unique showcase of practical and crazy things people create themselves — from electronic gizmos to urban farming to sculptures. It demonstrates what and how people are inventing, making and creating for a faire full of fun and inspiration. You can see a human elephant, geeks playing with a LiteBrite, kids learning to steer robots and so much more. It is delightful!

The guys below are creating props from floor pads. Just a couple of kids with a lot of ingenuity. He's holding an arm like you might find in a Marvel movie.

After a few unfortunate tear downs in the '80s, the art deco buildings were declared historic landmarks and are being restored.

Work Camp

A mere 13 years ago, Stacy, Hayden and I were part of a work trip to Mexico. We poured concrete, dug trenches, moved rocks and learned a lot from the residents with whom we worked.

Saving Turtles, One Turtle at a Time

The Turtle Hospital in Marathon does amazing work with turtles harmed by pollution, boats and general mishaps. The facility is actually a 1950s era motel and night club that had a sea water pool. In the 1980s it transitioned to the facility it is today.

I've rarely been in the Kauffman Center during daylight on a puffy cloud day. Looking up it's as though there is no roof.

Adventures Among Orangutans

Our last National Geographic Live of the series was all about orangutans in Borneo. Husband and wife team, Cheryl Knott and Tim Laman, have been working with the animals for 25 years. Fascinating.

Little Library Suite

These folks in Mission took the Free Little Library to a new level. It has rather an English country garden in the landscaping as well.

New Arrival

A gold-hatted gnome has appeared in my garden. Hayden gave it to me for Mother's Day. Love the whimsy it adds.

Hiking Hats

We walked the Kill Creek Streamway trail for a couple of miles. Little muggy but shady most of the way. Hats for everyone.

Usually when you stroll through the Monet garden at the Overland Park Arboretum, you feel tranquility and beauty but I happened upon the volunteers out in full force manicuring the garden.
