Sesame Street Live

We appear to be having a pre-show snack. We were in the Little Theater at Municipal Auditorium. As I recall, Morgan was not enamored by the larger than life characters when they appeared at the special reception before the show.

It's Been a Hard Winter

The garden decor has taken a beating, some of it caused by the tree limb-electrical line debacle. The gnome, which was in my dad's yard for years, is quite heavy so don't know how he toppled.

Oranges Are Changing It Up

I was recently admonished to try new fruits, as there are many different varieties popping up in grocery stores. So today I tried a Blood Orange (above) and a Sumo Mandarin (below). Both are absolutely delicious. The strange ruby interior of the blood orange almost scared me off but it was delicious. And the Sumo orange was easily peeled (I found out after I cut it). But don't get attached to Sumos. This one orange was $1.88!

Farewell to the Cape

This tribute to Kansas City's Superman is at 42nd and Broadway. Michael Wheeler, who for eight years has been known as KC Superman, will be honored tomorrow for his years of providing good cheer throughout the community with a 5K fun run after he announced he was hanging up his cape. Wheeler said he started running as therapy after his sister was murdered in 1978. But it wasn't until he started wearing the costume that people really responded to him. The mural by Whitney Kerr and Chase Hunter was commissioned in 2017. Wheeler says he also runs for the Lord so you can see Jesus on his football.

Who's Always Smiling, Never Sad?

It's Whizzo! Stacy and Hayden followed in their mother's footsteps and appeared on Whizzo in 1984. As you can see, my eager beavers (center, front row) each had their hands up to answer whatever Whizzo had asked. Whizzo was on the air from 1954 to 1987 in Kansas City.

Loving Winter

The 25-foot penguin in Penguin Park is one of the few truly appreciating our winter. He has stood in the park since 1965 (with a major refurbishing in 1996). He was created by Vernon Jones, a parks department engineer and the same person who created the giant old Santa in Gilham Park.

Birthday Lunch

George was more observer than helper as Holly blew out her candle. We are enjoying having our lunch crowd grow. Finn and George decided to share a chair.

Periscope Up

The electrician and KCP&L were finally able to coordinate and get our meter back on the house. But because codes have changed and the line had to be raised, we now have this periscope looking extension through our roof.

Looking for Cans

I'm not sure why my mother captioned this "looking for cans" but Stacy did collect cans to turn in for money. Don't know the 2 random girls nor apparently did my mother in her captioning. But Stacy, Hayden and Morgan are all looking intently.

Fallen Paintings

The current exhibit by Polly Apfelbaum at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art  features these "floor works" (which look like rugs to the untrained eye). She calls them fallen paintings. I don't envy the docents who have to keep people from stepping on them since they take up much of the exhibit space.

What a fun way to avoid the arctic tundra - watching slides. You can see Stacy, Hayden and Ray at the circus.

View from on High

Downtown is clear but distant from Scarritt Point in northeast Kansas City. The point is named for Nathan Scarritt, who built a log cabin on his farm there in 1862. Interestingly, for a time he was a teacher at the Shawnee Indian Mission. Long commute back then.
