Ye Old Pumpkin Man

Happy Halloween! My Dad got this guy when the girls were little and Stacy was not a fan. He used to blink on and off, which is what I think she didn't like. That part doesn't work anymore.

Something for Everyone

When you can't decide what your pumpkin design will be, just create everything - K-State, Chiefs and a bunch of others. Very creative.

Beware the Dragon

This homeowner said he saw this and wanted it for a Halloween decoration. I thought it might be a permanent addition to his landscape but says no. I love the way the sun catches the wings. This fellow is not an inflatable.

Fun at the Patch

Our pumpkin patch outing was fun but hard to photograph as Lowell was sleepy and both she and Finn thought it was too bright.

Baileys Harbor Range Lights

The Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin, lighthouse originally consisted only of the rear light which you can dimly see at the top of the back building. But ships continued to run aground so they added the front light. Ships set the course by positioning the back (white) light and the front (red) light and could safely navigate the shoals. Built in 1869, both were decommissioned by the US Coast Guard in1969 but have since been restored.

Not Easy to Light

This lighthouse in Door County is a bit isolated. It sets on an island that is accessible through a waterway, which sometimes you can walk/wade across but other times the water runs too high. The guide said the last couple of years you have to ride on the tractor wagon (below). The photo at the bottom shows how it is situated. Built in 1869, it continues in operation today although without an operator.

InVisible

InVisible is an exhibit in the foyer at the Museum at Prairiefire by 12 homeless and recently homeless artists. The pieces, which are for sale, are presented to give viewers a new perspective of emotion through art. This piece is by Morgan (pictured below) who through drugs and alcohol became homeless. But four years clean, she is now a student at the Kansas City Art Institute. Fascinating exhibit. Accounting firm, MarksNelson,  conceived of the exhibit after meeting homeless Kansas Citians through its Wrapped in Warmth project last winter.

Princess of Power and Elphaba

Hayden was She-Ra, Princess of Power, and Stacy was a witch, but not Elphaba because that wasn't a character in 1988.

Peek-a-Boo License

We surmise that these folks cut a hole in the cover because a car must show it is properly licensed to set more than 15 days in a driveway in Overland Park. It didn't used to have the hole cut so perhaps they had the city questioning.

Ancient Man and Turtle Island

This Ancient Man and Turtle Island (below) are new sculptures in Parsons by Stan Herd, best known as the crop artist. From Protection, KS, Herd creates earthworks on large pieces of land.

According to some Native Americans, Turtle Island is the original name for North America. The legend is that when the earth was covered by water, dirt was placed on the back of the "Great Turtle" to create North America.

Storm clouds hover over St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons while the sun shines. The weather kept changing - sun, rain, mist, sun, etc.

The Tower Stands Alone

The bell tower is all that remains of Faith Lutheran Church. The site is being converted to a Prairie Village Park. The intention was to leave the tower but now that are structural concerns so It may be coming down.

Araminta

Araminta, Harriet Tubman's birth name, is another of the Open Spaces KC exhibits. She is gracing Union Station because of her connection to another kind of station – one for the Underground Railroad. She has a rifle over her shoulder and a walking stick, presumably on one of her missions to lead slaves from captivity in the South. She also worked as a spy for the Union Army.

Lowell's Big Day

Lowell was baptized yesterday and performed admirably. She wore the dress I made for Hayden and it fit her perfectly.
