Winter Landscaping

Once again this homeowner has decided to bag his landscaping. After taking a photo last winter, I waited to see what the precious items were that were being covered. I didn't get a chance to get a photo but they looked like average plantings. I don't get this kind of cover for plants. Perhaps they should plant something that thrives here so people don't have this view each winter. photo courtesy of Howard

Use and Reuse

Why not use a canoe for a shelf? I don't know that it was ever actually a water-worthy canoe but it's an interesting decorating idea.

Seed

Not sure if the flag is stating the obvious - that this area needs to be seeded - or that it has been seeded. Not much evidence if it has been seeded.

All Fall Down

The steeple at Village Presbyterian Church lies on the ground. They are renovating and adding space and the steeple had to go. A new one will be erected from parts of this one. This steeple was original when the church was built in 1949 but then moved during expansion in 1955 and now will be harvested for parts.

Frozen in Place

The swan appears frozen in the ice. I suppose it is just sitting on top of the ice.

Never Alone

It's happening again. I'm being watched whenever I'm working. Sydney sometimes falls asleep while sitting there watching me but somehow never falls over.

Where Renovation Ends

At Union Station, you can still find traces of the old. And being me, I love to adventure into these places. This is at the top of the station.

On Closer Inspection

From a distance, the sculpture on the side of this house resembled a tree. Up close, you can see it's created from bleached bones. How macabre!

It's Melting

Our lovely warm spell is breaking up the ice. The ducks continued to sit on the ice. Perhaps the water is still uncomfortably cold, even for a duck.

Stating the Obvious

I'm sure there's a reason why this sign is necessary, but really, don't we all know this?

From Train to People

This bridge was built in 1898 to carry trains across a waterway and is now a foot bridge over Rush Creek in English Landing Park. It is one of only two bridges of its type still in existence.

Cone-ifers

The preschool kids delivered these trees to us. They are ice cream cones slathered with frosting and decorated with chocolate chips. The kids explained that the chips are actually pine cones and the teacher assured me they were safe to eat. I did not test that.

Crunch

I got nailed at Ward Parkway and Meyer Blvd. by a woman who thought that Meyer Circle was a roundabout and everyone would yield to her. So she just sailed out into traffic. Faulty logic under any circumstances. She's lucky she didn't take a few others down too.

Thin Ice

Despite this warning, I see many people skating here, sometimes playing hockey. The ice looks fairly thick and the pool is only about 18 inches so it's not much of a fall if you did go through the ice.

Strange Posts

I've been trying to figure out what these sculpture-like posts are. The church around the corner put them up. Then they put up a banner so I guess these are sign posts. Look better than many of the sign supports I've seen.

Our Gal Sal

When you work for a newspaper, there's no end of the cool things that are produced. This was in honor of my engagement in 1977, courtesy of folks at the Topeka Daily Capital. You gotta love the hair.

A Bit of Old Mexico

The historic Market Square in San Antonio gives you a flavor of Mexico from the food tents to the wares. Although it was founded in 1790, it moved to its current location in 1890.

The Tiny Alamo

The fort looks so small sitting in the heart of San Antonio when you consider the huge sensation the news of its fall to Mexican forces in 1836 caused. When we were there, it was a sea of purple waiting to get in.

There is a truck tire large enough to sit in. This was at Ripley's Believe It or Not museum. Quite a collection of odd things but we were out of the rain.

The lights hanging from the trees along the River Walk were stunning (although difficult to photograph). We saw the city Christmas tree (below) while on the riverboat ride.
