Old Time Music

This was the band at the end of the season celebration at Round Hill Bath & Tennis. The music was good, if you liked the 70s and the crowd did.

iPad Distribution

Above are the empty cases for iPad covers and below the chargers. Hayden and company distributed 860 iPads to the Indian Hills Middle School kids this week. She says now what she hears most often is "I don't know my password." photos courtesy of Hayden

Just Hanging Around

The Australia section of the Kansas City Zoo lets you get up close and personal with the kangaroos. They don't seem the least bothered by people so near with no fence separating. The kangaroo on the right has a baby, or joey, with her. Stacy said in Australia seeing kangaroos is unremarkable, like seeing deer here.

Manhattan Holiday Inn

I love that that's how this photo from August 1970 is labeled. It just begs the questions why were we there and why were we having a photo taken? I don't remember this at all. Susan's shades add a nice touch.

Orange Fluff

While it doesn't photograph well, this orange fluff was amazing because ... it was made with circus peanuts! Now if you don't like circus peanuts, you won't be amazed but I happen to like them. A woman at work told us about it and brought it in to give us a taste. It actually does taste like circus peanuts. I do wonder who sits around and thinks, let's make something with circus peanuts.

Dewey Update

Dewey is 13 weeks now. You can see she has grown a lot. She and Hayden will be starting obedience school, although she is already well-behaved, mostly.

Take A Flower

Someone wants you to have a happy day. Many of the flowers have disappeared so I guess folks are taking them.

Football Kickoff Rally

What you expect to see at a KU rally and ...
then there's the absurd.

Wall of Blue

Not sure what this is supposed to be. It was in the children's wing at work. I thought they would add something to it or write on it or something. There was a red one too. Eventually it fell down and they put it back up and now it's gone. I couldn't find the person who put it up. It remains a blue mystery.

Formal Attire

in 1973. I wonder what we were doing. I suspect Mom was getting dressed for something so her three clever daughters dug out some dresses to look fashionable too. I look more peasant than formal but that was sort of fitting.

What Color Is Scarlet?

I love the blooms on my Scarlet Runner Beans but I wouldn't call it scarlet, would you? Maybe the package was mislabled or I have a renegade.

It's Finally Over!

The last of the three giant cranes that have graced my work church for two years is packed up and ready to go. Hallelujah! No more incessant beeping as they back up or surprise people hovering outside a meeting room window. They left a lot of bare dirt behind, as you can see.

Scarborough Fair

My pot of parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. The parsley and thyme are taking over. You may recall the line from Simon and Garfunkel's song but it turns out the lyrics date back to the 1800s. And the interpretations are fascinating. Check it out sometime.

Never fear. The Zombie Outbreak Response Team is ever vigilant.

The Commonplace Is Now Treasured

Susan and I were at the Kenneth Spencer Research Library at KU examining some of the scrapbooks Mom made of Dad's articles. It's odd to look at them in such a setting under the careful eye of the curator. We were given the rolled cloth to support them. As Susan said, we used to eat dinner with them stacked nearby and now we have to be so careful. Dad donated them after he retired.

The Penguin Is King

Actually these are King Penguins in the Helzberg Penguin Plaza at the Kansas City Zoo. The exhibit opened last September and is a fantastic habitat.

Steve's First Day of School

Not sure what year this is. He may be waiting for the bus to Flint School. You can see our mailbox out by the street on 68th Terrace.

Sand Volleyball

An athletic ballet with sometimes an inglorius finish (below). Hayden gave it her all. It was a beautiful night to watch. They have 18 courts of volleyball going at once.

Royal Treats

No. 1 - a frosty malt! What's a baseball game without a frosty malt, even if you have to go to the outfield experience to get it.
No. 2 - winning and moving into first place, thanks to a little help from Detroit's loss.

Balloon Glow

The balloon glow at the Midwest Balloon Fest. Photo courtesy of Hayden. I didn't make it this year but it's on my list for next year.

Supermoon

Not completely super. That will be tonight but it was pretty cool.

Australian Parrot

The Rainbow Lorikeet, which is native to Australia, was on display in an aviary at the Kansas City Zoo. They are free to fly around you in this special enclosure but mostly they stay on the branches. But the one below decided to look closely at Stacy. Stacy wasn't panicked so I took a picture before shooing it away.

This beauty doesn't mind the heat.

Four Wheels of Freedom

In 1973 with my new Datsun, which enabled me to move out of Flint and get an apartment. No air conditioning but it ran. Hard to tell here but it was a lovely forest green.

Fought the Good Fight

Scott didn't win but we believe he educated a lot of people and maybe the next guy can be the giant slayer. Congratulations for a valiant effort. It's a beginning. Here Scott is giving a speech of thanks to his supporters.

The Tinman, 2014 Style

This tinman also looks like a construction dude but for what purpose I'm not sure. The VBS crew at work requested him and his creator said he wasn't sure what it signified. The kids were supposedly building a better world so I guess it was just a novelty.

Prairie on the Wall

The scrims on the outside of the Prairie Fire parking garage are cool. And when you are in the garage, you don't realize you are looking through a photo.

King Tut

A couple of the sarcophagi of King Tutankhamun, each one smaller until they reached the mummy. They were made of cypress with a thin layer of gold foil. These are part of the exhibit at Union Station. The exhibit presents reproductions made to scale of the originals, which cannot leave Egypt. The exhibit provides a fascinating story of the discovery of the tomb and the excavation of the artifacts.

Barely There

Stacy - 1 week. Happy Birthday to Stacy today.
